The town of Sturgis hosts the most popular motorcycle rally that is there to experience. It all happens at the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally every year in the first week of August.
However, there are certain logistical issues that need to be dealt by both the natives and the tourists that flock down to this area to catch a glimpse of the event. There are a total of 7,000 people living in this town. Therefore, when thousands of outsiders come down to attend the rally, there needs to be adequate arrangement made for them to live and eat.
The first Sturgis Motorcycle Rally was hosted by the motorcycle club Jackpine Gypsies way back in 1938. The club still has ownership over the tracks, the hill climb and the central ground where the rally is hosted. The Black Hills Classic is one of the initial events consisting of nine riders watched by a small group of intent audience as they watch them race ahead. A man by the name of Clarence "Pappy" Hoel introduced it. He established the Jackpine Gypsies in 1936 after purchasing an Indian Motorcycle franchise in Sturgis.
Although initially the attraction of the event was simply racing and stunt performances, it was in 1961 that the rally also started consisting of Hill climb and Motocross races. Half mile track race, head on collision with other vehicles, board wall crashes and ramp jumps.
The only time since its inception that the rally has not been held was in 1942, due to the shortage of gas during World War II.
The rally is the hotspot for most bike riders. All riders wish to be part of this event at least once in their lifetime. There are many who attend it every year. Since this is a one of a kind feeling, it is not enough to attend it one time. It is good to refurbish the memory every year.
However, if you attend the event, you should look like you are meant to be there. Therefore, those who are familiar with biking gear are more interested in wearing the beat accessories to the event. Others who are not so expert at the whole biking scene, try to put on something that will make them fit in with the rest.
Although there are many styles of bike gear that is available in the market, you should stick to leather when it comes to the material. The style should be of your choice, but compromising on the quality of the garment is a bad idea. There are many cheap, yet good imitators of the leather bike wear that will quickly tear after a few rounds wear. Therefore, it is better to invest once in pure leather accessories and have it last for a long time. Wearing leather is also practical for riders since the hard material will protect the skin from cutting open in case of an accident.
In recent years the number of enthusiasts who attend the Sturgis Rally have increased beyond the living population of the town. Families who attend this event often sport patches and shirts that say "I Rode Mine to Sturgis" which includes the year of attendance printed instead of the patch.
